In 1962, two years after we moved to Fort Collins, Colorado from the beautiful desert city of Albuquerque N.M., my mother purchased a Golden Retriever I named Mopsa’s Golden Duke, aka Pronto—a wonderful dog out of an English-bred bitch with the prefix Bixfield– a mid-century English bloodline. I took Pronto through 4-H obedience training; among many memories of this lovely boy, that he rescued my young brother when he swam out too far from our neighborhood raft on our neighborhood lake; he was an adventuresome and loving dog.
I was afflicted once more with a passion for Golden Retrievers in 1988, when I first saw American show Goldens at Crystal Glen Kennels in Fort Collins. With Crystal Glen I co-owned the lovely bitch Crystal Glen Just Adorable, daughter of CH Crystal Glen Justin Thyme, out of Ch Crystal Glen Lady of Illusion. aka Rhetta. Dora was stunning, a wonderful companion.
In 1990, after raising a first breeding pair of Goldens of our own while living on the Joder Arabian Ranch in the windy foothills of Boulder, my husband, Texas fiction writer Jack Brooks and I founded Gilded Peak Golden Retrievers on the banks of Dry Creek, a tributary of the Cache La Poudre River in Northern Colorado. I bred several litters from these beautiful dogs– Three Breezes Stetson and Three Breezes Katie. I grew and learned, read definitive breed books and poured over pedigrees– and made mistakes, turned over my breeding stock and began again, persisting despite being cash-poor.
In the early 90’s I purchased a gloriously beautiful male Golden from the Rachel Kennels in Atlanta, Rachel’s Fanfare for Colombo, and realized a life-long dream in purchasing from Ann Johnson and Gold Rush kennels in Princeton, the lovely Gold-Rush Sevilla, whose pedigree toplines to the most famous Golden in our breed, CH Cummings Gold Rush Charlie.
While I was limited by time and money in my desire to campaign my first highly pedigreed stud dog, Ch Ptd. Rachel’s Fanfare for Columbo (Am/Can CH Golden Oaks Knock ‘Em Dead ex Huntrails Meadowpond Solo), his progeny with that of Gold Rush Sevilla (Ch Gold Rush Riki Tiki Tavi ex Hillside KSDS Em 80), their wonderful combined bloodlines together with those of Lindroth Gilded Peak The Works on Rye aka Reilly, a beautifully bred second boy whose sire was a littermate to Sevilla’s dam, spread out over a host of memorable breedings from memorable dogs. Progeny, grand-progeny and great-grand progeny of Gilded Peak dogs and bitches include either breedings to or marrying of our bloodlines to those of the following stud dogs. All of the pedigrees of the stunning American Goldens listed here may be found at k9data.com . Looking at offspring and grand-offspring of these dogs leads you back to Ch-Ptd Rachel’s Fanfare for Colombo, Gold Rush Sevilla, and other dogs and bitches whose pedigrees include Gilded Peak.
Hence the saga of Gilded Peak is a colorful and grueling one. Suffice it to say that to me, looking back even as I begin again, I have come to see that the measure of a good breeding program is whether one has made any discernible contribution to the production of outstanding individuals.
Here is an exemplary pedigree, showing our breeding pair as the cornerstone. I have bolded the names of the breed greats in this pedigree, leaving no doubt as to the value of our beautiful pair and their several phenomenal litters together.

We repeated the Fanfare and Sevilla breedings, producing stunning and sound multi-purpose pups. We produced gorgeous puppies from the beautiful Honeybrook’s Dalliance, daughter of CH Tangleburr’s Night Shadow, our grandson of CH Cameo’s Countenance of Courage, Barney’s Splendor in the Stars, and grand-progeny of CH Kinsale’s Field of Dreams out of our beautiful Gilded Peak Lift Ticket.
From QuincyRidge Goldens, we brought in Gilded Peak Cache’, son of Kidd’s Oir Righe Nan Iar, in turn a son of CH Tangleburr’s Night Shadow; Jazzin’s Max’n out the Gold Card aka Vegas, son of Ch Gorca’s Maximus Gladiator. We have at various times also owned progeny of Ch Sunbeam’s Cruise Control, Ch Snowtree’s Grease!(Atlasta-JenLore No Mi Digas Adios aka Diego), Flyways Gilded Peak La Vie d’un Reve, (three crosses to River in four generations), and other beautiful well-bred American Golden Retrievers.
Out of our breedings we kept Gilded Peak A Kiss ShouldB Relentless and Gilded Peak Don’t Rush Amor, Tess, linebreeding half-brother to half-sister, often done throughout the development of the breed in the U.S. as well as abroad, which resulted in an exquisite litter. It was also beautiful Tess who was bred to the Swedish Import Double B’s Blade, a gorgeous son of Ch Tottelina Orchestra imported to the US by one of the first “English Cream” importers, Lena Sorensen, and ultimately to Knightwood’s Rocket Scientist on an AI.
The litter with Blade was stellar, producing the half-American half-English stud dog Double B’s Cutter, who went OFA Excellent. Cutter sired our beautiful girl Gilded Peak Scrumptious Munchkin, out of Double B Romanian import and magnificent English bitch Kona Mediguard, a daughter of CH Ordohegyi Harrys (sic).
Munch turned six in July of 2015 and we have high hopes for one litter with Angelo– in which case the pedigree will be 85% English/European and 15% American, carrying forward our bloodline in a stellar puppy bitch.
Water under the bridge, we have pressed on, tabling our breeding program for nearly ten years, until this summer, when we began our search for an English Golden Retriever male puppy.
We have had the greatest of luck in venturing into the fascinating new world of English and European Golden Retrievers; at this typing, I count at least 100 Facebook chums whose passion and avocation is the English Background, English in type Golden—see my recounting of the importation of our spectacular boy Angels Dance in Beauly Highland, aka Angelo. bred by Adrian Corici and Dana Bura, Beauly Highland Kennel, under the mentorship of Jim and Kate Crosbie of the world-renowned UK kennel Lislone Garbank in Ireland.
Beautiful Angelo will be six months old on October 5, 2015; he is the son of Multi CH Ashbury Angel Heart, Ashbury Goldens and Cathy Sontag, France, and of Lislone Garbank Loch Affric. The pedigree is a who’s who of the most renowned dogs in the world and is packed with breed greats, including Ch Taram du Bois de la Rayere, Ch Robin Hood of Glenn Sheallag– too many overachievers to list. Sire and dam go back to the top dogs setting English type. The sire of Affric, aka Zaffi, is none other than this year’s world champion, CH Tramin Arni Joy, who took the world title in Milan in summer of 2015.
